According to Fortune Magazine, "Coaching is unlocking a person's potential to maximize their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them. Clients say coaches bring out their best by helping them focus, break down tasks and clarify their values."

The basic "road map" of coaching...

  1. CLARIFY values and what your vision looks like.
  2. MAKE CHOICES that align with that vision.
  3. INTEGRATE those choices into the real world.

"Professional coaching is the art and science of assisting healthy and effectively functioning individuals move forward and gain more meaningful and satisfying outcomes in their lives, careers, businesses and organizations."

— Steve Mitten, Past President, International Coach Federation

Coaching is a powerful partnership for personal and professional development that improves performance and overall well-being. Professional coaching helps individuals and organizations clarify their vision, establish a course of action and sustain momentum toward goals. The coaching relationship provides a structure for progress, reflection and assessment, producing outcomes that align with values and priorities.

Coaching goes beyond the books. It's like trying to learn Karate from a book: it's very, very difficult! Why? Because most of us need a skilled practitioner and customized feedback to make significant and lasting improvement. Being an executive coach, I read many books on leadership; they are excellent, with many valuable insights and perspectives. Still, the longitudinal and sustainable aspects of one-to-one coaching produce results that are highly relevant, effective and lasting.

Coaching is not a quick fix. It embodies a deep, personal learning process that steadily empowers you to succeed beyond habitual blocks. Though the coach provides objective feedback, insight and assignments, the client is responsible for actually taking the steps toward producing desired outcomes.

Professional coaches are professionally trained to listen, observe, inquire, question, challenge, motivate and customize their approach in a manner that best serves the client's needs and objectives. Coaching provides the tools, structure and regular support to enhance the process of discovery and achievement, while offering the client accountability for their actions.
