Social Entrepreneur Spotlight
A social entrepreneur has a special gift, and calling, to
combine business acumen with altruistic motivation for the benefit
of humanity. This is not easy, and can create a unique set of
challenges not readily encountered in the business world. This is
where leadership support can be indispensable.
"These groups and leaders are neither
idealistic dreamers nor neo-hippie do-gooders. They are
entrepreneurs in the truest sense of the word. They are adept at
marshalling resources behind an idea, at creating organizations that
operate both efficiently and effectively. They apply sound
management tools and discipline, and they demand results." —

Client profile: Room to Read
Room to
Read's mission is to provide under-privileged children with
an opportunity to gain the lifelong gift of education. It was
founded on the belief that education is the key to breaking the
cycle of poverty and taking control of one's own life. They
currently focus their efforts on Cambodia, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Africa and Vietnam,
countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate their
children.
Room to Read is making a real impact on the world! With more than 1.7 million children accessing their 442 schools, 5,100 bilingual libraries and 108 computer labs - and 4,036 girls in their long-term scholarship program - they are providing opportunities that change lives and communities throughout the developing world. Their goal is to open more than 10,000 libraries and reach more than 5 million children by 2010. Join them in their efforts at www.roomtoread.org.
"Jeff's role has been... giving me an opportunity to
'come up for air' at least twice a month. On our calls, I leave the
day to day details and instead immerse myself in the bigger picture
of what my life is like, how I am doing as a CEO, what I should be
doing differently, and a host of other big picture items. The most
valuable contribution that coaching has made to my role as a leader
is that after each call I am more clear on what I need to do to
improve the organization, and what I need to ask of others to help
me to be a better leader and to make the organization more
effective. These, in turn, lower my stress level and make me a
happier person, which contributes to a better work environment and a
more well-balanced life." - John Wood, CEO & Founder, Room to
Read
Room to Read has received numerous awards and recognition, including the Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurshipthe and the Fast Company/Monitor Group Social Capitalist Awards four years in a row (2004-2008). "The
amazing organizations that received the Fast Company / Monitor Group
Social Capitalist Awards have found a better way to do good: They're
using the disciplines of the corporate world to tackle daunting
social problems." - Fast Company
